American Crime Story: Juicy Television

If it wasn’t for my incessant need to have some form of pun in my review headline this would instead be labelled: YOU REALLY NEED TO WATCH THIS. Since the very first episode I have been hooked on this retelling of the OJ Simpson trial and it really is a credit to Ryan Murphy and his team for the brilliant, high quality story telling, for managing to create a tense and suspense filled series with most, if not all, already knowing the outcome. However, it is easy to forget that the characters on screen, that most of these events…are based on truth.

I was a mere two years old when the double homicide of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman was committed, my only knowledge of this entire trial was what my family remembered and even that was sketchy. It was because of this that I found this series utterly mesmerising, shocking and it highlighted subjects that I just could not believe were still so relevant twenty years later. A dramatised, re-enactment this show may be but it was profoundly enlightening and I hope that the commissioned second season at FX has the same impact.  Continue reading “American Crime Story: Juicy Television”

Inside The Netflix Vault: Firefly and Serenity

You’ve trawled through all of their originals, you’ve re-watched their Disney offerings too many times to count and so you delve deeper into the Netflix Vault to see what you can find. There are some, far braver than I who trek deeper into the realm of obscure to find shows that you’re not quite sure what an Earth Netflix was thinking. This time around my search was cut short as I was recommended Firefly with ardent enthusiasm and I got stuck in over the Christmas break.  Continue reading “Inside The Netflix Vault: Firefly and Serenity”

Poldark: A Turner Surprise

As promised, that one chance viewing of an episode on a flight gave me more reason enough to finish the series and hence this brand, spanking new review. Poldark did not disappoint. Not that I was expecting it to, but I was also not expecting to be in tears by the finale or pulling on my hair during moments of sudden increased tension, or for that matter squeeing with happiness at how surprised I was by the direction of the plot. Hunter X Hunter: Bingeable Anime

As someone who adored watching anime throughout my childhood from the likes of: Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Beyblade and those episodes of Sailor Moon that are now lost in memory, I’m not so hesitant to delve into this realm of vibrant, creative and original series that many refuse to even try. Why are there people so reluctant to? Perhaps anime to those who have not peeped into the many hundreds that are out there consider it not appropriate for serious adult viewing, and it can be treated as children’s fodder compared to the mainstream television shows. (Much to the dismay of the millions of fans out there.) Just as many prefer not to watch foreign subtitled films, the same explanations could apply to anime which as popular as it is still remains a niche market for television in the broad worldwide sense. Sense8: Simply Sensational

Well, what can I say about Netflix’s latest original series sense8? Where do I even start!? How about with the most incredible, diverse cast that drama has probably ever seen? Perhaps with the highly engaging and intriguing concept that you crave to know more about? Maybe with the glorious scenery and enriched style of camera editing? No? Would you care for some of the most memorable scenes that will leave you thinking about them days after you’ve seen them? If you think I’m over exaggerating about the quality of this show then please let me tell you why I couldn’t be more serious.

Outlander: A Bonnie Show Indeed

Ye cannae miss thes shaw! I was none other than Jon Snow starting this series, I knew nothing apart from seeing a pretty woman and an equally as pretty man from the promotional poster, and it was the lack of spoilers that was just one of the reasons why I was swept up into it so quickly. Outlander: An immersive historical fantasy with just the right dashing of romance, loveable and loathable characters, and all set in the glorious beauty of the Scottish Highlands that I’ve longed to visit…STARZ won me over once again and I’m pretty certain that all you other lads and lasses out there will join me in saying so if you haven’t already. I also wish to thank cosmopolitewannabe for being the one to recommend this one to me! Continue reading “Outlander: A Bonnie Show Indeed”

Vikings: The Bloodiest Blast from the Past

You might have heard of these fierce, axe-wielding 8th Century warriors or seen pictures of bearded men and plaited women in horned helmets, but Vikings brought to you by the History network breaks all conventional bounds and brings you a gritty, gruesome and above all a realistic series that leaves you thirsting for more.
