This isn’t Game of Thrones, Morty. ~ Rick

That’s right Rick, your hilariously funny, top quality adult animated series is definitely not Game of Thrones…it’s even better! Sorry, yes I said it. I haven’t been able to stomach GoT since a couple of episodes into the fifth season and it was Rick and Morty and their weird and wonderful world that I ran away to. I wanted something completely different, I wanted something light and entertaining, and something that wasn’t going to disappoint. Creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, gave me exactly that.

In a nutshell, adultswim‘s Rick and Morty features the adventures and more than likely mis-adventures of super genius scientist Rick and his grandson Morty. Why are they misadventures? Because, Rick is a raging alcoholic who burps his lungs out every five and a half seconds and Morty who is lacking a brain cell or two can’t bring himself to miss out. Chuck in parallel dimensions, millions of alien planets and a dysfunctional family and you’ve got yourself one powerful comedy cocktail. I’m serious, this is the only series in which anything is possible and yet can manage on the point continuity.

The dialogue..now, watching the first episode was like suffering from wit whiplash as I haven’t watched anything quite like it. Rick’s unique speech patterns and interrupting burps coupled with the ridiculousness of his handling of situations makes for incredibly enjoyable viewing. Only in Rick and Morty would one be able to ‘save the day’ by jamming a giant seed up one’s rear.

As you might have already guessed by my description as an adult show the whole jamming seeds up the rear thing, you should know that this series really isn’t for the faint hearted, over sensitive or conservative viewer. There are some controversial gems that depending on who you are can leave you laughing, gasping, wincing or downright appalled. However, there are some subjects tackled that highlights the cruelty and stupidity in areas of our society such as; sexism, rape, Capitalism and religion to name just a few. They are broached with exaggerated but all too real harshness that instigates a discussion rather than moral messages being addressed in the episodes themselves. That is to be expected with the non-serious nature of this series but even then I often found my shocked at how brutally honest the plots could become. There are some emotional, hard-hitting moments!

The characters could not be more diverse. A typical episode can feature so many colourful characters and personalities that it’s impossible to pick a favourite. Breakfast with ‘Bird Person’ who is as the name describes a bird person. Dinner with Mr. Poopybutthole who is not a poopy butthole but an adorable yellow guy in a top hat. Lastly…well, tea with Abradolf Lincler would be interesting? A fusion of Abraham Lincoln and Adolf Hitler. Watch it yourself if you don’t believe me.

This still says it all about all of the amazing characters! Source: http://www.nohomers.net/showthread.php?103105-Rick-and-Morty/page12

Fun Fact: Arin Hanson known for his popular Youtube channel Game Grumps makes a cameo in the Season Two finale!

Speaking of voice actors Justin Roiland plays both Rick and Morty so you have to commend the performances in this series. Featuring also are: Chris Parnell playing Dad Jerry, Spencer Grammer playing sister Summer, Sarah Chalke playing Mum Beth and you can’t forget that Tom Kenny (Spongebob Squarepants) makes an appearance!

There are moments during this series that are just unforgettable and you’ll be laughing at them weeks after and even singing some of them. Especially look out for whenever the characters switch on the television..it’s simply hilarious. So popular were the songs also that they brought out a soundtrack and if you’re not so scared of spoilers then I suggest you give this one a listen. All in all, if you’re looking for a good time and don’t fancy a heavy drama, and love a bit of wacky science fiction funniness then Rick and Morty is perfect for you.  If you’re a Pokemon fan, then I suggest the Rick and Morty game on App Store Pocket Morty, which is based off the Pokemon format but in complete Rick and Morty style. Also season three will be starting up soon so you’d best catch up for all the drama on its way.
